What is the Fringe Project?
The Fringe Project is a gathering and sharing of all types of art mediums bundled up in hand-made journals, spread across several geographies.
The initial journals were inserted into the mainstream art community, by our SEEDING ARTISTS, in public spaces, through friend sharing, and partnerships with local schools and establishments.
The concept is simple – find a Fringe Journal in the wild, create in it and pass it on – give it to a friend, place it in a public space, or partner with your local community.
What art mediums are accepted?
All art mediums welcome! Traditional fine arts, music, writing and short stories, illustration, art journaling, painting, slow-stitching, etc.
We love seeing what you create!
What do I do with the journal once I’ve added my art to it?
Once you have added your art to a Fringe Journal, please scan the QR code (located on the inside back cover) and provide the requested information (upload of your artwork/story/music, your city and country, and the unique Fringe Journal Number(located on the supper left corner of this page cover). There is additional room if you would like to add a short story of how you came upon the Fringe Journal and how you passed it on to another.
We will upload your details to this page, so please come back and visit to follow the journal on it’s journey across cities, states, and countries.
On IG? Please share your art and tag us (@thefringeproject) so we can share and spread the joy!
Place the journal in a public space or mail it to an artist friend.
Spread the #FRINGE LOVE all around the world. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
We’d love to see the journals travel far and wide so PLEASE continue to pass the journal on! #beagoodhuman
What do I do if I complete the final page?
If you are the final artist working in a journal, we ask that you mail the journal to the address listed on the back inside cover. If you are unable to mail it back home, we ask that you pass the journal to another to either complete the final page or mail it on your behalf. We’d hate to see our journals travel so far without making their final mile back home.
We understand that there will be a cost to ship the journal, (especially for non-U.S. artists), so we appreciate you supporting the project and sharing your art with the world.
Below are the five Fringe Project Seeding Artists. Feel free to visit their social media space, give ’em a shout out, and follow along.
You can also follow along with #allthingsthefringeproject by visiting our IG page << HERE >>
Sit back, grab your favorite beverage, take a visit, and join The Fringe Project revolution.

Story: The Fringe Journal is on a big journey and thanks to the kind invitation of my art friend Špela @nabi_journaling, I now get to be part of it. “Our freedom grows from fantasy”, with this in mind, I filled my pages with paper, paint, fabric, beads and upcycled materials. Woven together with a great deal of fantasy, I left my mark before the journal moves on – a piece of creative freedom on its journey.

Story: I received this beautiful Fringe Journal from the talented artist @camilagarciaart, and I was so excited to be part of this inspiring project. Creating in it felt joyful and freeing — a space to express myself and connect through art. It’s so nice to see all the pages in person and feel the energy of different artists. I think it’s such an amazing project that beautifully connects people through creativity.

Story: I received my Fringe Journal right before I was about to leave for a 6 week trip to Europe! So I decided to bring it along on both of my Art & Faith Creative Retreats in France and Italy. It was a great little journal to share my journey of creating art on our retreats, and I hope the next person enjoys the process (and journey) as much as I did!

Story: I received the journal from @helena_m_dias and immediatly thought it could be a perfect place to share my recently obsession of journaling inspired by floriography. So I created a double page spread inspired by cosmos becauae their meaning speaks to me deeply. They eimbolize balance, harmony and joy, reminding us to find beauty in simplicity and peace in the small moment of life. As I worked on these pages, I wanted to capture that feeling – the gentle rhythm of colors and shapes coming together in a calm and joyful flow.

Story: October 13 is my birthday and it’s also the first time I’ve journaled in eight months. My husband and I moved to the country and bought some property and we’ve been turning it into a Homestead, I guess you could call it a new creative outlet and that hasn’t provided me much time to spend in my studio, creating with paper and fabrics. I was excited when a friend reached out to me and asked me if I wanted to be a part of the fringe journal and I’m honored to submit my piece.

Story: I was thrilled to receive journal 33 from Tiffany Smith and instantly knew I wanted to do the full first page spread as an exploration of line, movement, simplicity, and minimalism. The number 33 is a spiritually powerful number and has a special place in my life so I played with number & composition to honor the 33 on this journal. The white space represents that which inspires & that which allows us to breathe. I hope those who view my page will take a moment to pause in the white space, breathe, and let inspiration flow through them.

Story: This journal was put through the door by a friend and happened to land on the mat on the 10th anniversary of my first date with Blacksmith Paul, a lover who sadly died within the year of us getting together. So, it seemed fitting to honour that memory. I printed out some little photo memories and painted the backdrop to represent the August skies and heather in the Peak District where he lived. The poem is mine, from the memoir, Dear Blacksmith. I wrote it the day he died. I sent it to him in a message and his final words were ‘I love your poem, I love clouds and I love you.’ I stained the poem and pictures with coffee to give it a sepia effect.

Story: I received the Fringe Journal from Lisa Goddard, it was such an honour to be asked. My finished page is nothing like I had planned. I thought about it too much and got quite overwhelmed. So, whilst working on another project, I decided to use up the bits and pieces on my desk and make a quick watercolour doodle for the focal point. I included some Welsh book page text to represent where I live, and the rest of the layers are random scraps. The journal will be making its way to Sweden next.

Story: What a beautiful sketchbook Lisa Goddard sent me! The old newsprint pages inside were a real inspiration. As a landscape artist I knew I wanted to contribute some nature based art, and I saw this picture of self important Edwardian men, the symbol of what society ‘should’ be, the outdated version of conquest, colonisation and land used as a resource. I wanted to bring back a softer divine feminine power to the page. Offering up the moon and land as symbols, with them easing gently over the men on the picture. Holding them and still replacing their firey power. I hope it shows there is a different way to be on this earth.

Story:I felt called to a page with a black and white fragment stitched that looked like a spine or snake to me. I settled in and breathed deeply and slowly, and chose a feather from my art table altar to stitch down. I then found a scrap of black and white yarn and knew it was meant to be part of the page, so I slowly couch stitched it and focused on each breath moving in sync with the stitching by hand…one breath in, one stitch in, one breath out, one stitch out. It was peaceful and spacious inside me, like this hush fell over me. Then I burned palo santo and infused the page with the sacred smoke, smudging marks along the bottom. I added white stitches to the top and then I felt inspired to add red stitches to the wrap of the book. I call it a poetic stitch. I completed it all by infusing the whole book with sage smoke and saying a blessing for all who have and will touch this book. That we all will be blessed with deep creative expression and courage to follow our heart’s desires to create, that all fears, worries and doubts will be lifted away so we can be open to the gifts of our soul without restriction. And so it is.
